Villa Maria Beach House
Known for its picturesque beaches, the coastal town of Donabate has grown in recent years to a become a satellite residential town to Dublin. The clients approached Cobbe Architecture with a simple brief—to create a new home that was all about its connection with the environment.
Although the site had stunning, uninterrupted water views, the sloped nature of the site was challenging in the design process.
There was a need for a high level of sensitivity and good citizenship due to the specific zoning and location of the house. There was a need for architecture to not only respond to its own site and brief, but also to respond to its greater context. Defying the complex contours of the site, the house is arranged over two levels and into two distinct volumes. A "sleeping volume" clad in zinc and a "living volume of white render,". Each element is clad in a single durable material, selected in direct response to the often harsh environmental conditions of the coastal location
