MHL Headquarters Fit-Out
The brief called for a sophisticated Category B headquarters office for the MHL Group, prioritising a light-filled, modern fit-out that is both visually striking and functionally fit for purpose. The existing building, a protected structure formerly serving as the Central Fire Brigade Station, required exceptionally sensitive handling to respect and preserve its historic character. The design approach ensured that all interventions were carefully integrated, maintaining the integrity of the original fabric while introducing contemporary elements. A notable feature of the scheme was the meticulous restoration of the original Central Fire Station sign on Tara Street, which reinstates a key historical element as part of the building’s public presence.
The proposal features a harmonious blend of open plan and cellular offices, complemented by meeting rooms, a boardroom, breakout spaces, and a staff canteen. Generous glazing and thoughtful spatial planning allow natural light to permeate the interior, fostering an uplifting and productive work environment. The fit-out is designed to facilitate both collaborative and independent work, ensuring that each space is optimised for its intended use while remaining sensitive to the building’s heritage. Cobbe Architecture acted as the project manager and project lead. Completion of the project was achieved within the scheduled programme and budget, demonstrating a successful balance between architectural ambition and practical delivery.
